What’s red and yellow and fun all over? A mountain of spaghetti piled high with cheese and games for kids of all ages of course! And that’s just what’s happening this Sunday, January 8th from 5-8PM at Lewis Hall in Burton.

The Vashon Island Unitarian Fellowship is hosting its first ever Family Fun Night and will be featuring mountains of homemade spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread, plus kid-friendly games, and even a Talent/No-talent show. The event is free of charge and open to all Vashon families.

Kathy at the apothecary coffee shop had a degree in psychology, specializing in brain chemistry and a second degree in herbology. She looked a little like she didn’t belong, but if you saw her and spoke to her about anything at all intelligible she would smile her toothless smile and beam and gladly answer any reasonable question you put before her. The south end of the coffee house was her domain.

With nearly 500 votes, The Little House took the top spot in the First Annual Merchant Gingerbread House Contest sponsored by the Vashon Island Chamber of Commerce. Congratulations to Bettie Edwards and Mardi Ljubich for a job well done! Those that followed were just votes apart. The details of the houses were incredible, the imaginations so creative and even the aroma of gingerbread was a delight. It was great to see the merchants so excited and working together.

I am broken down on Cunnliffe Road on the north end. Daryl, the postmaster is mad as hell and has somewhere to go in his red convertible Mustang. The damn mail is baking in the midday sun.

I took this job to please the in-laws. Some civil worker notion that in 25 years I could take four weeks paid holiday.

Every year, for many, many years, the island community of Vashon has drawn together to make sure that everyone has a merry Christmas, and especially the youngest ones among us. This year is no different. Once again Vashon Kiwanis will work together with all our social service organizations and churches to gather up the names of those who truly need our care.

Mark your Calendars as Santa will arrive on a new day this year! Dasher, Santa, and Mrs. Clause will ride into town on his sleigh in the early evening on the first Saturday of December (12-3-11). In past years Santa has arrived on Friday night, but after hearing from disappointed commuting parents who could not arrive in time for the celebration, the decision was made to make the change.

Voice of Vashon has launched the public phase of a major master planning effort — an online survey of Islander’s desires and needs for broadcast and webcast music, informational television, entertainment shows and emergency alert information. Emails and leafleting teams have started reaching out on the Island to find out what people most want from Voice of Vashon, how they’d like to receive it and how service can be improved as the station moves into the future. The master planning and survey work comes more than a decade after Voice of Vashon went on the air with its first webcast.

The Vashon Farmers Market is moving into the warm and dry Vashon High School Commons beginning November 12 through December 10, 2011. Besides offering shelter from the weather, this central location also offers ample parking. The Farmers Market had great success holding the final two markets of 2010 in the VHS Commons, so we look forward to even greater results by conducting the last four markets at this location. More than 35 farmers and crafters will participate in these final markets.

A critical analysis of the Vietnam War has long since been left to historians. But what still is important today is honoring those soldiers left standing, and those who lost their lives fighting in the jungles of Vietnam. On 1st Friday, October 7, 2011, Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum did just that through their exhibit, Home of Record: Vashon and the Vietnam War.

Our wars are still going on, although we want them to stop – they haven’t stopped, and it won’t stop for quite a while. In Iraq the fighting and dying may be ending, but not in Afghanistan. This means more wounded are lying in battlefield hospitals, still others are waiting to be transported to hospitals stateside and still more are in hospitals here in Washington State, waiting for their wounds to heal so that they can return home. Regardless of our own personal stand on all this, we can do something.

Vashon’s streets and neighborhoods will soon be shinning purple lights to send a strong message that, ‘Domestic Violence has No Place in Our Community.’ The campaign is part of a national awareness initiative that involves businesses and residents shining a purple light bulb or string of purple lights on their front porch or front windows for the entire month of October to remember the victims and honor the survivors of domestic violence.
