In this ink-and-paper illustration, Leo Toye shares his impressions of the dynamism of Vashon’s Open Studio. And for the more linear, he explains below:

While one thinks easily of the many tools we artists use, it is less usual to note & celebrate the tools used by the visitors, our guests… who must follow their intuition & take the initiative to create a personally unique experience of the Vashon Art Studio Tour…

Put May 5th on your calenders and come early because by noon we are mostly sold out. Members have been busy dividing and cultivating perennials, shrubs and grasses all year long. We will have lovely Fuchsias and Geraniums from Kay White’s garden. The perfect gift for Mothers Day!

Edie Ulatoski, General Joe’s "better half," will share the other side of their story, what was it like to be married to an assistant Army attaché in the former Soviet Union during the Cold War and raise their family behind the Iron Curtain, living in the American Embassy in Moscow. Edie will tell her story at 4 pm on Sunday, May 6th at the Blue Heron Arts Center as part of the Telling Stories: A Speaker Series By and About Vashon Locals to benefit Vashon Community Care.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Strawberry Festival Grand Marshal. When nominating someone please tell us how they have enhanced Island life, given back to the community, their involvement in community service work, how long they have lived on Vashon, and generally why you think they should be Vashon Island’s Grand Marshal.

On Saturday April 21, the Vashon Sportsmen’s Club will host the second annual Pinewood Derby race for kids and adults. In addition to the racing there will be a pinewood derby car show, a full size car show, lunch, drinks, prizes and lots of fun for everyone. Wagons of Steel is planning on being there with at least one full sized race car, a few pine wood derby racers, and tee shirts.

April 7 was a clear windy day at Bremerton Raceway and Wagons of Steel was there for the first day of drag racing in 2012. We arrived casually, in the late morning. It was a test and tune session so there was no schedule. The starting line was remarkably decent, considering that the track hadn’t been used since last season and traction was pretty good. Our big wagon picked up right where we left it last year, running consistent mid eleven second quarter mile times at 115 mph. Not bad for a two ton wagon running on 87 octane!

I’ve been called a fundamentalist about four times. At least I’ve been called a fundamentalist about four times to my face. Perhaps this word has been used to describe me in my absence more often. And I’ll admit it doesn’t bother me. Perhaps the only thing that bothers me about being called a fundamentalist is that the word gets used by so many people who don’t really even know what the word means. Indeed, the word has changed its meaning.

In Terry Sullivan’s "Ferry Affair" piece in the March 29th Loop, he argues for sustaining present levels of car ferry service, but only for now. He then paints an interesting picture of a future Vashon where we simply do without and accept a certain level of inconvenience in exchange for reduced or curtailed car ferry service.

Celebrate the annual spring celebration at Ober Park with Spring Fling on Saturday, April 7th. What do two women born 100 years apart have in common? Quite a bit it turns out. Pam Ingalls and Abby Williams Hill, painters both, Islanders too, are women of immeasurable talent with an overwhelming desire to travel. Pam will be giving a talk on Thursday, March 22, 7:00 p.m. at the Land Trust building; Pam Ingalls: Wanderlust, How Travel Influences Art.

The Co-op’s popular auction raises nearly 40% of the school’s budget, enabling the island institution to keep tuition affordable and offer scholarships to families in need.

March 12, 2012 marks the 100th birthday of Girl Scouting in the United States when Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low held the very first Girl Scout meeting in her Savannah, Georgia, home. Those eighteen brand new Girl Scouts had no way of knowing that they had just paved the way for millions of American girls by showing them a new way to have fun while learning life skills. Within a few years Juliette received requests from women all over the United States asking how to start their own troops and today Girl Scouts USA is home to over 3.2 million girls and adults.

Vashon Solar LLC has been working hard to get a COMMUNITY SOLAR PROJECT up and running here on the island. As PSE customers, we are all dependent upon dirty energy. 65% of PSE’s energy mix comes from coal and gas. In an effort to move Vashon towards a cleaner energy future, community volunteers came together last year to form Vashon Solar LLC. Vashon Solar LLC is launching the first project for a photovoltaic array on Vashon. Community solar projects have become a growing trend

One sign of local resiliency is Vashon’s credit union. Island residents looking for ways to improve their financial situation have found an ally in PSCCU. More than 1500 members have opened accounts there as the credit union approaches its first anniversary in March. In 2012, the staff is poised to assist with debt re-structuring, and various loans, including both re-financing or setting up mortgage loans. Ann Leda Shapiro is one of those singing the praises of Vashon’s credit union.

On Saturday, February 18th, your National Rodeo Correspondent left home and hearth to brave the seventy-degree temperatures and clear skies of Tucson and to attend the 2012 Fiesta De Los Vaqueros on your behalf. What follows is his special report, including editorial comments.

In 1911 eight women who lived in the little town of Burton began meeting every other Tuesday to read books and discuss current events. They called themselves the "Two to Four Club," since those were the hours of their meetings. It wasn’t long before their husbands began calling them the "Two by Four Club."
