As the white wife of a man of color, and as the mother of two biracial children, I have developed a keen awareness of racism. I can smell racism a mile away. Maybe farther. Unfortunately it is a lot closer than that. It’s the policeman stopping my husband on the street to verify ownership of his bicycle. It’s the stranger in the grocery store raving about my son’s hair.

By now most everyone on the island is aware of the horrific event which resulted in the loss of a young man just beginning to move from childhood to young adult. I find it very endearing that our town sees fit to do whatever it takes to surround our friends in need.

Harbor School, a non-profit, independent school serving Grades 4 through 8, invites local families to attend our Fall Open House and learn more about the school and its offerings.

"Oh, sure" says the Rodeo Director, "no problem. You can shoot from the bucking gates. Hell, you can go ahead and shoot from the arena if you want, as long as you know how to stay out of the way."

We live in a very special and unique community with an amazingly diverse population. But have you ever been curious about the island itself…it’s geology, ecology and history. Or the culture, the social science and demographics that give insight into the past, present and future of our island and its population.

I must confess that I viewed the Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club largely as a passel of peculiar, singly-focused (mostly) women who meet occasionally to obsess about plants and wear silly hats. In my own defense I was not entirely wrong

The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club, notorious for its no-holds-barred celebratory blasts, is planning yet another unruly bash to celebrate the Club’s 60th Anniversary and concordant exhibit at the History Museum.

Miller-Blue, Camp Sealth’s horse outfitter for the last 25 years, is going out of business at the end of this summer. The proprietor will be selling his entire herd. As his valuable longtime customers, Camp Fire has the option to purchase horses and all their tack at an extremely favorable price if we can secure donations and pledges now. Camp Fire shares the outfitter’s hope that these horses will be able to continue in high quality youth programs that serve kids who truly care about them.

Amanda Knox’s friend, Raffaele Sollecito, is writing about his experience in Perugia, Italy, when he and Amanda were falsely accused of murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher, in 2007. The next level, the Italian Supreme Court in Rome, will rule on the case in late March 2013 and their duty is to assure that the appeal judges, Hellmann and Zanetti, followed the letter of the law and to listen to rebuttal arguments from the prosecution.

The annual Flower Faire Aug 3-4 was a great success. You could smell the wonderful scent of lilies before you got to the Library door. Bella is one of four horses in the Wallace stable, now her herd, and she calls out to two who romp in the pasture without her.
