I cut my fingernails last night. Every once in a while I rebel against the fact that as a pianist and a writer I have had to keep my nails short since I started playing the piano when I was three. Mostly I like it, but sometimes I just wish I could have those really clicky kind of nails that have beautiful manicures in vibrant colors that women can use as an extension of their power and confidence. The best I can do is, if I get some gift money, get a French manicure where they paint on fake fingernail edges . I really love that.

In your ideal life, you may picture yourself as a miller or a cobbler, selling your products for Vashon currency that you can exchange for all your needs. The fact is, though, we don’t have much of a market for those occupations just yet, and you won’t be able to pay your mortgage or other debts with Vashon currency. Since we produce very little out here, most of our income comes via those of you that commute to the mainland everyday. So how do we get from this "business as usual" world to a saner one we would like to live in?

Did you know that you could save or improve the life of 50 very sick people by being an organ and tissue donor? There is no age limit to being a donor. Nearly everyone can donate tissues or organs or both. Do not assume that you are not healthy enough to donate. Organ transplant teams can decide that at the time of death.

We all know we live in a very special and unique community composed of an amazingly diverse population. But have you ever been curious about the island itself…it’s geology, ecology and history. Or the culture, the social science and demographics that give insight into the past, present and future of our island and its population.

Winter doldrums can numb your brain, make it perform as if chained. Buds opening into new, oxygen-producing leaves help to unchain it. It’s invigorating to get outdoors and breathe early-spring air, especially when the sun shines. So does giving your brain the fuel it needs. Choline is a prime nourisher of neurotransmitters.

The Salish Sea Early Music Festival presents A Broken Consort, the second of five Vashon Island 2012 Salish Sea Early Music Festival performances and an exploration of renaissance music on period instruments with Jeffrey Cohan, renaissance tenor and bass transverse flutes, Shula Kleinerman on the off-the-shoulder renaissance violin and John Lenti, renaissance lute on Thursday, February 9 at 7:30 PM at Vashon United Methodist Church at 17928 Vashon Highway SW.

Last week our big projection television lost its electronic mind and began showing pictures in strange colors, and also breaking the images into streaks and blotches, while making a noise like something inside was whirling around furiously losing pieces, and getting ready to explode. We turned it off and moved a back-up television from my office into the living room. We seldom leave the house and television is our main form of entertainment, and I didn’t really need to watch TV while working on the computer, did I?

Congressman McDermott invites residents, business and community leaders in the Vashon-Maury Island community to meet with him at The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie for a cup of coffee and to exchange thoughts on current issues in Congress and/or to request help with issues with the federal government.

The Search and Rescue team has been searching today for an elderly Alzheimer’s patient wearing tennis shoes and red pajamas.  He was last seen Wednesday evening around 6:30pm near Engel’s Gas Station on Maury Island walking on Dockton Rd.   He lives near Portage on Maury Island with his son Jory Randles.  The Search team has not found him yet and have just called off the search for the day due to darkness.

The Vashon Island School District announced Thursday that it would close schools on Friday — the third consecutive day this week--due to weather conditions. All programs, activities and building use is cancelled. Following the School district the Vashon Park District will also be canceling all events and activities for Friday. The Harbor School is also closed Friday

Most of Vashon remained Iced in Thursday after the morning Ice/Snow mixture weighing down tree branches on roads and Power lines across Vashon Maury Island. It is estimated that most or all of Maury Island is without power.  Also, most or all of south end is without power from around 220th   St  south.  Other outages are being reported island wide.  Although there are crews working to restore power on the island, PSE encourages customers to plan on being without power until at least Friday and perhaps longer, depending on weather conditions

First snow now an ice storm has canceled schools and meeting on Vashon. Many island businesses remained closed for a second day in a row. Many people found themselves Iced In when they woke up Thursday Morning. Roads still closed on Vashon include;

SW 268th St. between 99th Ave SW and 94th Ave SW
103rd Ave SW (Also known as “Ferry Hill”) between Vashon Hwy SW and SW 112th St. 87th Ave SW between SW Cemetery Rd. and Dockton Rd. SW

Vashon got a Snowday, when a much anticipated Wednesday morning snow storm brought 6-8 inches of Snow to Vashon-Maury Island. Vashon Schools closed both Wednesday and Thursday.

Travelling the world with his guitar, harmonicas, and engaging wit, he sings the traditional songs of Scotland and his own masterfully crafted songs in a style which is modern and accessible, yet utterly authentic. He is highly regarded as an interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns, and has been described as "one of the finest singers in Scotland in any style".

The National Weather Service has reduced the snow forecast to a total
daytime accumulation today of 2 to 4 inches, about one-third the
amount forecast last night for the 24 hour period. However, a new
feature in the latest forecast is wind. The forecast is for blustery
wind, 11 to 14 mph increasing to between 23 and 26 mph.

Vashon Island School District will be closed Wednesday, January 18th, due to predicted snow accumulation over night and tomorrow. All
programs, activities and building use is cancelled.
The Vashon Park District has also canceled all classes and programs.

Vashon Waits for Snow. Vashon got its first taste of snow over the MLK holiday weekend when snow showers deposited from a trace to 3 4 inches. Some areas had little snow.  Freezing tempters made many of Vashon’s side roads dangerous. Plowing kept the main highway and road to the ferry dock clear. 103rd Ave near the North-end ferry, otherwise known as ferry hill, is treacherous making access to the Ferry Park and ride lot tricky.

This issue, I’d like to talk about an element of personal resilience that, happily, we can all put in place. You will probably recall a few times in the last two winters when the roads were covered by a sheet of ice. If you didn’t have a fire-breathing, snow-eating four wheeler, you may have been a bit wary about venturing out into what could end up being an all day harrowing experience or worse. Your vehicle could end up joining the lost souls in the roadside snowdrifts at the bottom of one of our hills. We would have stayed home if there were nothing we needed to get. It may have been batteries or candles if the power was out, but, most likely, it had to do with food and water.

Vashon got its first taste of Snow for 2012 over the weekend with amounts ranging from none to two to four inches. More snow is predicted to fall Tuesday into Wednesday with up to a foot of snow predicted before rain comes in Thursday. Wednesday looks to be the worst day with snow fall predicted up to seven inches. Most snow fell in the center and north end of Vashon leaving some side streets slick and hills a challenge. Below is an update from Voice of Vashon Standing by.
