Vashon Schools to Close Friday, Power out to Maury Island

The Vashon Island School District announced Thursday that it would close schools on Friday — the third consecutive day this week--due to weather conditions. All programs, activities and building use is cancelled. Following the School district the Vashon Park District will also be canceling all events and activities for Friday. The Harbor School is also closed Friday

Most of Vashon remained Iced in Thursday after the morning Ice/Snow mixture weighing down tree branches on roads and Power lines across Vashon Maury Island. It is estimated that most or all of Maury Island is without power.  Also, most or all of south end is without power from around 220th   St  south.  Other outages are being reported island wide.  Although there are crews working to restore power on the island, PSE encourages customers to plan on being without power until at least Friday and perhaps longer, depending on weather conditions.  If your experience an outage you are encouraged to call PSE at 1-888 225-5773.  Some residents are reporting that the automated phone reporting system is not accepting new reports of power outages and is instead directing callers to the internet.  If accessing the internet is not possible, it is suggested that you call the number again as subsequent contact may allow phone reporting of the outage.  The volume of calls to PSE may hinder the ability of the automated system to always allow phone reporting.

A snow plow was reported stuck on Wax orchards road, but was able to get back on the road. King County road crews are currently reporting very hazardous driving conditions along with several road closures. Jim Didrickson of King County Roads reports that 40-50 trees have fallen onto Vashon-Maury roadways.  Most of these trees block at least part of the road.  Crews are working on clearing the debris, but expect it to take at least one more full day.  Drivers are urged to use caution when passing fallen trees and to take special care not to drive over fallen power lines.
The following roads are still closed on the island.
SW 268th St. between 99th Ave SW and 94th Ave SW on Maury Island

103rd Ave SW (Also known as “Ferry Hill”) between Vashon Hwy SW and SW 112th St. on Vashon Island
87th Ave SW between SW Cemetery Rd. and Dockton Rd. SW on Vashon Island

It is also reported that there is a downed power line on Glen Acres road.

A less powerful weather system is expected to possibly bring another 1-2 inches of snow overnight.  However, the temperature will also start warming during the night and will warm to the mid-40’s during the day on Friday.  This warmer weather will be accompanied by rain and should assist in the clearing of snow from the roads.

We may be faced with wet & heavy snow in the next few days - causing trees and power lines to come down. If you spot a downed power line on the ground, please assume it is live and do not attempt to go near it.

Be sure to check the status of your particular meeting or activity before heading out.
