Vashon got its first taste of Snow for 2012 over the weekend with amounts ranging from none to two to four inches. More snow is predicted to fall Tuesday into Wednesday with up to a foot of snow predicted before rain comes in Thursday. Wednesday looks to be the worst day with snow fall predicted up to seven inches. Most snow fell in the center and north end of Vashon leaving some side streets slick and hills a challenge. Below is an update from Voice of Vashon Standing by.
This is a 1650AM special bulletin. Hazardous road conditions and service interruptions still exist as a result of snow accumulation on the island.
It is reported that Vashon Hwy is clear but that that 103rd Ave near the North-end ferry, otherwise known as ferry hill, is treacherous. If motorists need to reach the ferry parking lot, it is recommended they travel north as far as possible on Vashon Hwy before crossing over the 103rd Ave. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution when venturing onto side roads as many have become very icy over night and most have not yet been sanded.
County Metro Transit is remaining on snow routing countywide until travel conditions improve. Please note, buses will also be chained, which means they have to travel at slower speeds. Before traveling, riders should check Metro's Snow & Ice page for the most current status of Metro service.
Due to the weather, a limited number of staff will be available in Metro's Customer Information call center at 206-553-3000 on Monday. The call center would normally be closed on this holiday. Call volumes may be heavy, however, and wait times on hold for assistance may be long. Your patience is appreciated.
More snow is expected over the next few days with the greater accumulations occurring on Tuesday and Wednesdays. All are urged to plan accordingly.
Notification of school closures in the event of snow will be announced here on 1650AM and can also be had at the Vashon School district WEB site at www.vashonsd.org, that’s v-a-s-h-o-n-s-d.org.
