Vashon Waits for Snow, List of Events Canceled Grows

Vashon Waits for Snow. Vashon got its first taste of snow over the MLK holiday weekend when snow showers deposited from a trace to 3 4 inches. Some areas had little snow. Freezing tempters made many of Vashon’s side roads dangerous. Plowing kept the main highway and road to the ferry dock clear. 103rd Ave near the North-end ferry, otherwise known as ferry hill, is treacherous making access to the Ferry Park and ride lot tricky.

Vashon schools started 2 hours late Tuesday with more snow predicted for latter Tuesday afternoon lasting into Wednesday. In light of the snow predictions and safety considerations the Vashon Maury Community Council has canceled tonight’s meeting schedules for 7pm. The Vashon Island Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting of the General Membership scheduled for Wednesday, January 18th is being postponed due to the inclement weather predictions. Snow is predicted to fall through Wednesday with snow accumulations from 10-12 inches.

THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF COMMUNITY MEETING CANCELLATIONS

dependent on the weather conditions.

Below is a reprint of the Voice of Vashon standing announcement sent out Tuesday at 9:30am

This is a 1650AM special bulletin.  Hazardous road conditions and service interruptions still exist as a result of snow accumulation on the island.

It is reported that Vashon Hwy is clear but that that 103rd Ave near the North-end ferry, otherwise known as ferry hill, is treacherous.  If motorists need to reach the ferry parking lot, it is recommended they travel north as far as possible on Vashon Hwy before crossing over the 103rd Ave.  Drivers are urged to use extreme caution when venturing onto side roads as many have become very icy overnight and most have not yet been sanded.

County Metro Transit is remaining on snow routingcountywide until travel conditions improve. Please note, buses will also be chained, which means they have to travel at slower speeds. Before traveling, riders should check Metro's Snow & Ice page for the most current status of Metro service.

Due to the weather, a limited number of staff will be available in Metro's Customer Information call center at 206-553-3000on Monday. The call center would normally be closed on this holiday. Call volumes may be heavy, however, and wait times on hold for assistance may be long.  Your patience is appreciated.

More snow is expected over the next few days with the greater accumulations occurring on Tuesday and Wednesdays.  All are urged to plan accordingly.

Notification of school closures in the event of snow will be announced here on 1650AM and can also be had at the Vashon School district WEB site at www.vashonsd.org, that’s v-a-s-h-o-n-s-d.org.
