Island drummer Todd Zimberg will reunite with two of his closest musician friends once again, guitarist Michael Gotz and bass player Keith Lowe, for another epic performance at the Red Bicycle Bistro. The trio has had so much fun playing gigs at the Red Bike that they decided to come back and give the Island another spectacular night of jazz, rock and blues.

After writing so exhaustively about the grief process after my husband died, it hardly seems fair not to write about how it’s going after two and a half years, because things have changed.

You have probably heard or read of the Paleo or caveman diet. Heck, you may even already be on it. It’s theory is that we will thrive if we’ll eat as our remote ancestors did. Enough with all this GMO and Genetically Engineered food. Down with forbidding meat, or fats. Enough with all the sugar, MSG, and other chemical additives. Faugh to packaged foods. Cavemen were omnivorous.

“Remember when you were a little kid and you would spin until you had to fall down? Or run to cool off? Or jump from the back of a couch and really really fly?”

The conventions are over and our next president will be either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.  A few years ago, it looked like we were going to have a very humdrum choice of the two ruling family establishment candidates, Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton.

We were Dad’s rear view mirror coming down Fauntleroy Avenue.  On our knees, in the back seat of our 1949 Oldsmobile Super 88, only the 98 had a bigger engine.  Our Olds had a “whirl-a- way” gear that was triggered by a hidden button under the gas pedal.  When Dad tromped it, to pass or run a yellow light, our heads would snap back from the power of “whirl-a-way.”

So. I was out in the yard picking up garbage. Not just any garbage, mind you. This garbage consisted of the mangled wrappers of all the food my dog, Marley, has pilfered lately.

I do love lamb. It is expensive, but a couple of shoulder chops or lamb steaks can be made to go a long way, cutting the per-serving cost of a lamb entrée to a less budget-bashing amount.

Coffee and Community – The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie is a new book featuring the photographs of island photographer Terry Donnelly along with stories from ten fellow islanders who frequent The Roasterie.

The Connect & Glow meditative exercises quickly bring participants to a deep connection with their inner source of vibrant well-being. The exercises are inspired by ancient Eastern wisdom and modern quantum physics, and grew out of experiments with visualizing the energetic stimulation of the limbic center of the brain in an effort to heal depression

Bring the family!  There’s plenty of grass and natural berms to spread out those picnic blankets and enjoy some wonderful music on a warm summer night.  Families can come relax, let the kids play on the playground and enjoy the entertainment at these summer events.

Chautauqua Music Festival is an all-day music festival on Vashon Island that raises money for underprivileged kids in the elementary and middle school music programs. It combines Vashon youth and adult music acts with performers from Seattle, great outdoor food and camping at our local Eagles Aerie 3144

Picture this scenario.  The presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party is lagging in the polls before the nominating convention.  Another candidate that might attract more votes lags behind in elected delegates but can take the nomination if the superdelegates vote for him.

O death
O death
Won’t you spare me over to another year?

In England, not celebrated for great cuisine, we were served a simple potato salad consisting of pieces of cooked potato and mayonnaise. In Germany, the potato “salad” arrived at our table piping hot and doused with bacon drippings and vinegar.

Jeff Kanzler is a Seattle born singer-songwriter. Initially working in Seattle before he moved to Los Angeles, then to a remote part of the Alaskan interior and ultimately to Vashon, his work to date is primarily Americana with traditional instrumentation.

Revolutionary music may seem hard to come by in these days and times. Long gone is the era of artists like Bob Marley, The Clash, Stevie Wonder and Patti Smith getting airplay and bringing their messages to the masses.

Just four months ago, Voice of Vashon opened its Storefront Studio in uptown Vashon. Today, there are twenty-two new live shows on the air, each with its own unique reflection of life here on Vashon and hosted by Island residents.

Those of you that have read my column for some time remember that my primary subject has always been transitioning our society away from a fossil fuel-based economy bent on infinite growth.  One of the reasons for transition is that the ever-growing use of fossil fuels is creating a change in our climate that threatens the existence of the world we know.

During our six-day stay on San Juan Island in June, Southern Resident orcas were nowhere to be found. The west side of the island was a lonely place without J, K and L Pods. Sure, Transient killer whales and a few Minke whales swam by, but June is customarily the time when Residents do the West Side Shuffle. Except for kayaks and commercial shipping traffic, Haro Strait looked empty.

“Can we make it to the big log”, I asked my brother Mike. He was four years younger. I was the better swimmer. Mike never liked the water and like myself, had barely made it through swimming lessons.

Jonathan Burgess and Tim Hulley will co-lead this Kirtan, along with talented and enthusiastic friends, including Scott Wurtz on tabla (Indian drums) and Solana Chavez on response vocals.

Together for years writing and playing original music on Vashon Island and in the Seattle area, The FieldHands are a rock band. Their music blends some of the best traits of rock, alternative country and the Americana vibe present in music from artists like Wilco, Son Volt, Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams, Iris Dement and others.

The info for today’s Island Epicure column comes courtesy of Brad Lemley’s Alternative Health article in Laissez Faire Letter. It’s too valuable to keep to myself. Many of us beg off on buying organic because they are more expensive. Actually, some foods can be bought, and eaten, from the non-organic list because they are never sprayed with the deadly insecticide glyphosate, main ingredient of Round Up.
