SPOKE, a new business focused on body wellness and performance art, is set to liven up the downtown business scene. Spoke’s grand opening will be March 6th during First Friday Art Walk. Spoke Gallery is thrilled to be showing the work of Olivia Pendergast.

Vashon’s favorite auction, the Labor of Love online auction to benefit Vashon Community Care will soon be open for bidding! The Labor of Love auction begins at noon on Wednesday, February 25, and runs for two weeks, concluding at noon on March 11.

Vashon Film Society rolls out the red carpet for its eighteenth annual Oscar Night at the Vashon Theatre on Sunday, February 22.

The University of Washington (UW) College of Built Environments (CBE) Storefront Studio is returning to Vashon Island to develop designs that re-imagine the Vashon Farmers Market for the Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA).

Now Islanders at their desks and in local Vashon businesses can count on a steady diet of music on KVSH-FM throughout each weekday. As always, the “Morning Scramble” kicks off the weekday from 8 to 11 am, with a different team of personalities each morning bringing their own unique musical sensibilities to the airwaves.

The Backbone Campaign celebrates 11 years of community engagement, artful activism and political theatre this month.

Voice of Vashon has realized another long-held dream – succession. We are doing that in collaboration with faculty and students at Vashon High School to bring talented young people into the VoV fold.

On Wednesday, January 21, five Harbor School students were honored by VFW Local Post #2826 as part of the 2014-15 VFW Youth Essay Contest. Harbor School had three 1st Place award winners for their grade and and two 3rd Place winners.

Two teams of AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members arrived to Vashon Island on January 15th. The teams, Blue Five and Gold Four, will be serving on the Island until March 20th. Blue Five, consisting of twelve young adults is being hosted by the Rotary Club of Vashon Island and will be working for five organizations of the Island: the Vashon Parks District, the Land Trust, Sunrise Ridge, the Fruit Club, and Camp Sealth. Gold Four, made up of nine young adults, will be working full time for Camp Sealth.

Hestia Retreat ( is a Vashon group dedicated to the support of women’s emergence. We offer day retreats and monthly gatherings that allow women to learn about themselves and live more whole, fulfilling lives.

On January 5, long-time islander and  community volunteer Dave Rogers was up on his roof, straightening out a large tarp that he had recently put up to cover a leak.  Suddenly a gust of wind rushed under the tarp and pushed him off the roof.  He landed flat on his back on the stairs below.

The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit will host a shape note singing school on Saturday, February 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. This event is free, and open to the whole Vashon Community.

Friends of Mukai will present a program featuring Michael Sullivan, Principal and Historian of Artifacts Consulting, Inc. at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 29th at the Vashon Maury Island Land Trust Building.  Friends of Mukai commissioned his firm to perform a detailed architectural assessment of the historic landmarked Mukai fruit barreling plant for Friends of Mukai.

The season of short days and long nights, of cold rain outside and warm fires inside the longhouse, was perfectly suited for the native Salish people of Puget Sound to tell stories in the evenings.  According to Roger Fernandes, “For all of human history there has been storytelling. It is the most effective and powerful way of sharing, teaching, and communicating.”

Vashon Island emergency preparedness got a big boost last Friday when Puget Sound Energy Foundation delivered a truly big check to Voice of Vashon and Vashon Allied Arts. The two grants total $30,000.

Vashon Community Scholarship Foundation is abuzz planning Spell It! 2015.  This annual benefit event helps raise scholarship funds for Vashon Island School District graduating seniors.

The Curious Savage, written by John Patrick, is a comedic play about Ethel P. Savage, a woman whose husband recently died and left her ten million dollars. Contrasting the kindness and loyalty of psychiatric patients with the avarice and vanity of “respectable” public figures, it calls into question conventional definitions of sanity while lampooning celebrity culture.

Vashon Artists in Schools (VAIS) is a collaboration between Vashon Allied Arts and Vashon Island School District, pairing professional artists with teachers and students (k - 12) for meaningful, curriculum based arts learning.

On December 3rd, Vashon Island School District Superintendent Michael Soltman hosted King County Executive Dow Constantine for a tour of schools, meetings with principals, and a “round table” discussion with District leaders that included students.
