On Thursday, December 11th Vashon-Maury Audubon Society presents Woodpeckers of North America, A Naturalist’s Guide with Paul Bannick. This free program starts at 7pm at the Land Trust Building on Bank Road.

Waterworks Studio always puts on a stellar show for the Vashon Island Holiday Art Studio Tour, but for 2014 it’s a virtual meteor shower of Island artists.

On Monday, November 3rd, 20 children excitedly entered room 105 at Chautauqua for their first day of Mi Escuelita Spanish/English bilingual preschool. Earlier this year, Vashon Island School District secured an annual $150,000 grant to fund this groundbreaking free preschool program for income eligible families on Vashon.

What’s Happening to Our Bees? Numerous theories have been posited to explain the mysterious affliction that began plaguing honeybees in what is now known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), where bees across North America and Europe were dying in epidemic numbers.

Harbor School students were excited to spend three days in the Service Learning program that they call “GiveBack.” Groups of students identify and engage with complex issues like hunger, pollinator collapse, homelessness, childhood illness, or elder care. The mixed age groups find projects and needs with which they can begin to help.

Quail eggs are not easy to find.  Quail raised with local and organic feed and in humane conditions is especially unique.  Except for those reared by backyard bird keepers, quail are generally kept in crowded battery cages built for commercial production.

The collective of island designers dubbed the “Vashonistas” are banding together with Vashon Film Society on Friday, November 7 to co-produce an irrepressible First Friday event celebrating ageless style.

The Vashon Schools Foundation hosted a Major Donor Thank You event on the evening of October 23rd located in the former Nirvana restaurant space in Vashon town.  Invitees included private individuals and business owners in the Vashon community who had made large scale donations to the Foundation during the 2014 fundraising campaign.  

Voice of Vashon is now broadcasting Vashon High School sports live. David Leonhardt has just completed covering the soccer games for VoV unless he makes it off island to cover some of the girls’ playoff games.

VashonBePrepared invites the entire community to learn more about landslide risks on Vashon, a risk that ranks in the top three for the Island, right up there along with earthquake and severe weather.

Norm Mathews, owner of the Vashon Thriftway, was presented with the 2014 “Excellence in Operations” award by the Washington Food Industry Association. Mathews received the honor in a surprise ceremony which highlighted his many achievements within grocery business.

Voice of Vashon will make history at 7am on Monday, October 13 when KVSH 101.9FM begins broadcasting. It will be the first new community FM station to go on the air in the Puget Sound Region

The Vashon Island School District (VISD) has received a highly sought after grant from Washington State’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) to start a free Spanish/English bilingual preschool for three to four year old children whose families are income eligible.

Since we live in a part of the world that has been minimally impacted by chaotic weather, we may tend to downplay the urgency of addressing climate change.  On my weather page, I have seen severe weather march across the Midwest and East virtually non stop all summer.
