The Vashon Island Chorale begins its fall session on Tuesday, Sept. 6, culminating in concerts on Dec. 3 and 4. The major work to be presented is Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Also featured will be works from Abraham Kaplan’s Eight Days of Chanukah, Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria, and traditional carols by Sir David Willcocks.

The 2011-2012 Vashon Chamber Music Series will feature a thoughtfully selected group of exemplary musicians by Artistic Directors Rowena Hammill and Douglas Davis. The Concert Series, now in its third year, begins Oct. 7, with the Beethoven Archduke Trio and Dvořák Piano Quartet No. 2 in E flat minor, featuring violinist Stephen Bryant, violist Sue Jane Bryant, pianist Allan Dameron, Rowena Hammill, cello and Douglas Davis, cello.

Remember Walk, Don’t Run, Wipeout and The Lonely Bull? For those who recall those late 1950s and ‘60s instrumental megahits by The Ventures, The Surfaris and Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass, you’ll want to run, not walk, to Ober Park Thursday, August 25. Shark Biscuit will play these and other fun, upbeat favorites 7 to 9 pm, in the free summer concert series finale.

Vashon Winery’s fourth annual music festival, featuring many local musicians, takes place Saturday, August 20 at Vashon Winery.

Opening up the Festival at 2pm will be local Vashon band Riverbend. A popular island band with members that played for many years as part of The Garage Boys, as well as The Colwell Brothers and The Riptide Rambles and the Up With People groups.

Vashon Park District will host a free noon hour harp concert
presented by the Vashon Island Harp Camp student ensemble on
Wednesday, August 10. Families and music lovers are encouraged to
bring a picnic lunch to Ober Park for the spectacular ten-harp
performance. The group of 12-15 year old harp players is directed by
island harp teacher Leslie McMichael and will showcase music from
folk to classical to a medley of movie theme songs.

Those who attend should prepare to play a percussion instrument Cutler will provide. Herky Cutler was born in Montreal and now makes his home in Alberta, Canada. He’s played guitar since he was 19, but more "in the closet" than out until 1992. That’s when Cutler made his performance debut. He’s since added the harmonica, bass and percussion to his repertoire and started writing songs in 1993.

Wolff Bowden grew up in a house on concrete stilts, fifteen feet above a Florida swamp. Summer nights brought symphonies of alligators, owls and frogs. But in Wolff’s recurring dream, it was always winter, and he walked out among the cypresses to sit by a blazing fire where he would sing to a strange collection of forest beings he called The Winterlings.

Shark Biscuit plays surf and rock instrumentals from the golden age of the 1950's and 60's, plus a few surprises! This high-energy ensemble is six strong, and parlays reverb-soaked guitar stylings, tribal drumming and rumbling bass lines with a powerful horn section and a rockin' keyboard. Their music is highly danceable and brings smiles to all ages. The classic Shark Biscuit sound evokes tonal memories of Dick Dale, the Belairs, the Chantays, the Ventures and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.

Asa Broomhall has done it again with his latest self-produced album ‘Revelry Road’. Recorded live over 5 days in the farmhouse where Asa grew up on the Sunshine Coast. It builds on Asa’s previous work by seamlessly combining full band tracks and solo acoustic songs showing the true depth of his songwriting and musicianship.
