Vashon Park District, in collaboration with Vashon Allied Arts, opens the free Summer Concerts in the Park Series 6:30 p.m., Saturday, June 23, at Ober Park with a double bill of world music from Avaaza and Manooghi Hi.

On June 30, Islanders are invited to a concert of improvised music by international performing artist, pianist Lee Pui Ming at Hanna Barn. And following up the next day, you get your own chance to explore creative play when Pui Ming partners with Mary Ganzon, movement artist, to offer an afternoon workshop, also at the Barn.

Church of the Holy Spirit is honored to present internationally acclaimed harpsichordist Jillon Stoppels Dupree, in a benefit concert on Friday, June 22nd, at 7:30 p.m. She will be performing a full solo recital, including a harpsichord/organ duet with CHS Director of Music Paul Swenson. We are very fortunate to be able to host a musician of Ms. Dupree’s stature.

The Free Range Folk Choir will be presenting a concert at 7pm on Sunday, June 17th at the Vashon Methodist Church (17928 Vashon Highway SW). Come enjoy the harmonies of a cappella choral music from around the world. As always, admission is free; donations in support of the event are welcome.

When local rocker Ian Moore recommends a band, it’s worth paying attention. Influenced by The Kinks, Neil Young and The Talking Heads, this new musical project formed by Austin, Texas based musicians, singer Erik Sanden, guitarist Joe Reyes and bassist Odie, was formerly known as Buttercup.

Join Ron Irvine and the Vashon Wine Club in a wine tasting at the Vashon Roasterie. Tasting starts anytime after 6pm on Friday, May 25. Irvine will select four wines for people to taste, a white and three reds with a slant towards a bit unusual and definitely good value.

Poultry In Motion was formed a few years ago and hangs out at the Coop (The Society for Miscreant Musicians Music Hall on the North End of the Island) every Tuesday for rehearsal. The music swings around all kinds of styles from Country through Cajun to Rock.

KEXP SEATTLE - This Seattle-born, Alaska-based singer-songwriter debuts with a jaw-dropping set of beautifully crafted country-folk. Kanzler has a fine, expressive voice with a touch of gravel and his melodies are often sublime, reminiscent at times of early Dylan.

San Francisco-based roots lead singer Nell Robinson and her smokin’ All Star Band play Alabama soul music with a Bay Area twist, 7:30 pm, Saturday, April 28, at Vashon Allied Arts. "Utterly won me over, charmed me silly," said Sing OUT Magazine.

This band has been fermenting for years. The members have been eyeing each other as potential band mates, while continuing to play with other Island musical configurations, such as Island Fusion, Shy Sundays, BeSides and Goldaline.

The Salish Sea Early Music Festival presents guitarist Oleg Timofeyev, flutist Jeffrey Cohan and violist Steve Creswell in 1820: Flute, Viola and Guitar, a rare program of great chamber music from the time of Beethoven and Schubert on period instruments on Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 PM at Vashon United Methodist Church at 17928 Vashon Highway SW on Vashon Island.

Grammy Award winner Michelle Shocked returns with her Roccupy!!-themed Roadworks 2012 tour.

In 2010, Shocked launched Roadworks, a five-year touring project that curates audience’s favorite songs while developing new, unreleased material. This tour introduces opener Jimmy Cabeza deVaca, an Angeleno who plays nylon-string guitar, accordion, banjo, electric guitar and piano. He will open the show with Shocked’s "Folkaoke" concept, accompanying volunteers from the audience who have a choice of singing "Blowing in the Wind" (à la Bob Dylan), "Deportee" (à la Joan Baez), "Do-Re-Mi" (à la Woody Guthrie), or "This Land Is Your Land" (à la Pete Seeger).

Last spring, the Seattle rapper Macklemore rocked the Open Space in a sold out show for what some fans called "the best thing that’s ever happened on Vashon." Now Blue Scholars are set to bring their world-class hip hop to the island on Sunday, April 22, at 6:30 PM.

Born Hilary Perkins, San Francisco area roots singer Nell Robinson performs in the name of her late grandmother in honor of her Southern (Alabama) ancestry, and it’s as Nell that she will sing at the Blue Heron at 7:30 pm, Saturday, April 28, with her All-Star Band, the Jaybirds.

Hold onto your seats...Teresa Tudury returns to Vashon for an evening of music and side-splitting stage patter at Open Space. With a deep, sultry voice that magnetizes audiences, and a scathing comedic wit to match, Teresa is a consummate performer who pours out her original songs with power, verve, passion, and disarming humor. Teresa’s voice has been described as a cross between Bette Midler and Bonnie Raitt (LA Weekly). Her vocal stylings are perfectly complemented by her bluesy guitar playing.

Island musician Tab Tabscott got bit by the music bug early. At the tender age of 10, while learning to play guitar, he heard his teacher play dobro and was immediately intrigued with the instrument.

VAA New Works Series will bring the eclectic world music of Avaaza to stage Saturday, March 10, 7:30 p.m. Influenced by music from the Mediterranean region, including Flamenco, Gypsy, Arabic, Persian and North African, Avazza is also inspired by music of the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.

Students at Vashon High School share their talents at the Red Bike’s Open Mic Night on March 9th at 8pm. The evening will be hosted by VHS seniors Sage Everett and Yusuf Griffen, who will entertain and introduce their peers performing music, comedy, magic, poetry, dance and more.

The Portage Fill Big Band is celebrating 39 years of playing music this year. The band was formed in 1973. The group is comprised of 18 musicians and 2 vocalists and they play songs from the Big Band era. This includes songs from Glenn Miller, Count Basie Orchestra and many more.

Blumeadows was gifted by God and the Earth mother. He is a descendant of the Mississippi Choctaw Nation and is a ‘magda vehu’, which means ‘Black Indian’. He discovered the magic of music through his voice and guitar, which he picked up left-handed, at an early age and has been determined to follow an unbeaten path.
