In  last week’s column on Local Currency and  in previous ones, I’ve called for the relocalization of our Vashon economy as a hedge against the economic disturbances to come as a result of diminishing resources.  I’d like to continue that discussion.

Dear readers, your eyes will thank you for checking out Odin Lonning’s supernatural-themed Tlingit artwork at Vashon Intuitive Arts this month. Titles such as “Shaman’s Wand,” “Spirit Canoe,” and, of course, “Supernatural Allies: Thunderbird and Seawolf,”reflect the essence of the pieces.

Earlier this month, Julian Smith of Vashon Island, Washington, was one of two Washington State University seniors honored with the2011 Big Ten Senior Award in Academics.

7. More is not always better.  The more in this case is repetition.  If your workout is based on high repetition sets you are losing out on the benefits of hard work.  This is especially true when combining high repetition sets (15 or more) with single joint exercises like the bicep curl and tricep extension.

During his life to date, Islander Joe Ulatoski has held 47 different jobs, lived in 26 different places and worked in 47 different countries. This fact alone tells you what a remarkable life Joe has led. On Sunday, May 15th, Joe will share interesting stories from his unique and varied life experiences as part of Vashon Community Care’s Telling Stories, a Speaker Series by and about Vashon Locals.

On May 6, 2011, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito will have spent 1,277 days in prison for a murder they did not commit.  One week longer than Meredith Kercher’s actual murderer, Rudy Guede.

Islanders responded to the recent opening of Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union by opening accounts already totaling more than 2 million dollars. Clearly, many of us consider it important that our money be invested exclusively in our community.

I sent an email to a friend the other day. It was in response to the recent Island screening of the film the Economics of Happiness and the panel discussion that followed. As it turned out, I had seen the film a while back and had been underwhelmed by it. In the email though, I had promised I would give it a second viewing at some point.

In April, 2012, the Vashon Island Chorale will present a concert of music written by local composers or composers with "ties" to the community.

It’s been a good week for doggerel here at Casa Tuel. It started out innocently enough. It began as I was digging out buttercups:

Andrew Franks and Alexander Atkins have been making movies together for more than a decade. They planned their first film in the hallways of McMurray, and by high school they were utilizing the talents of their teachers and showing their films at the Vashon Theater.

Meeting an entrepreneur friend recently, I asked her, “How’s business?”
“Slow,” she said, “but we’re still eating beans.”
Bless the bean, so thrifty yet adaptable to a thousand different, delicious recipes. I could write a whole book of bean recipes, and did decades ago. Unfortunately “Beans, Rices, and Pastas” is out of print now. Shucks, I could write a book just on bean soups. Leaving room for other news and columns in The Loop, I’ll content myself with including just a few in this issue.

OK, OK, OK.  So maybe you poured your heart and soul into in and it was just thrown in your face. Maybe it was a dying business. It was a great idea, a good location but not the right time and it just wouldn’t fly.

Here’s the second installment in the series outlining the 10 worst and most often committed workout mistakes.

Joe McDermott is coming to hear our opinions about the proposed changes in the structure of the UACs. This is our opportunity to let him know what we think. VMICC meeting Monday April 25th, at 7PM at McMurray.

After 20 years Wendy Braicks is leaving the helm of the Park District. Read on as Wendy explains and thanks the community.

In the next several weeks I will be outlining the 10 biggest workout mistakes made by the masses.  Take notes if you are stuck in a rut or a beginner.  This information will propel you much closer to your goals and at a faster rate.

Blue Monster is five piece instrumental funk band that has been playing venues and festivals in the northwest since 2005,originally started as a trio on Vashon island

I’m in our library, working on an earlier version of this column, when the fragile calm is shattered like a brick tossed through a window. Our oldest son Colin, ten, and oldest daughter, Meredith, eight, have discovered that they disagree.

November 2, 2007, Via Della Pergola 7, Perugia, Italy, 10:30am.  Amanda Knox, a West Seattleite with ties to Vashon Island, arrives at her apartment; she had hurried home to shower and change, having been gone all night.  It was a holiday weekend so she and Raffaele Sollecito, who was waiting at back his apartment, were taking a drive to visit the ancient Roman city of Gubbio.

“Honey, there’s a whale in the yard! Grab the camera,” I shouted to Odin around 7:30 on Sunday night, March 27. A juvenile Gray whale glided sideways, barely 10 feet off our beach, waving tail flukes and a pec flipper. S/he had eelgrass draped over the pec flipper, suggesting s/he was bottom foraging in shallow water for tasty tidbits: crustaceans, worms, et al.

Wednesday, October 31, 2007, Halloween.  The university students in Perugia, Italy are in a holiday mood.  Meredith Kercher, Amanda Knox and their friends attended a Halloween pub-crawl until the wee hours and were looking forward to the three-day weekend.

Amanda Knox and her friend, Raffaele Sollecito, were wrongly convicted in 2009 of murdering her British roommate and friend, Meredith Kercher.  They are serving 26-year and 25-year prison sentences near Perugia, Italy.  Rudy Guede, the real killer, is serving only 16 years for the murder; his sentence shortened after the Perugian court encouraged him to ‘apologize’ to the Kercher’s for murdering their daughter.  I am not kidding.

As we approach the growing season, remember that one of the best things you can do to sustain your family in an uncertain future is to grow a vegetable garden.  This week, I’m deviating from the usual format to bring a timely message.  If you are considering buying seeds, I have some important information for you to consider before making your purchase.
