Men Who Don't Work

Andrew Franks and Alexander Atkins have been making movies together for more than a decade. They planned their first film in the hallways of McMurray, and by high school they were utilizing the talents of their teachers and showing their films at the Vashon Theater. The enthusiasm that the island showed for their passion motivated them both to pursue filmmaking in college. Now, they have reunited in Portland, OR, and have set out to create their most ambitious and promising short film to date, “Men Who Don’t Work”. 

Adapted from Raymond Carver’s short story, What Do You Do In San Francisco?, it tells the tale of postman who develops a strange concern for a family that moves into a house on his route. Both challenging and cinematic, this film’s major strength, much like Carver’s writing, will be its authentic and minimalist look at the intricacies of day to day life.

Set to be shot the last week of May, Alex and Andrew have already assembled the majority of a talented and entirely volunteer cast and crew. Much like Vashon, Portland's arts-oriented, volunteer-driven community will allow them to produce a high quality, festival-worthy short film for a fraction of what it might cost to make elsewhere. To raise the funds necessary to do Carver's words justice, they have turned to Kickstarter.com, the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world. The success of this type of fundraiser rests on the small contributions of many, and they need your help to spread the word further. Andrew and Alex wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for the people of Vashon, and they want to keep it that way, making Vashon part of their future.
