Thank you Vashon! This will be my last year with the Park District. I had a personal goal to stay in this position for 20 years. I reached my 20th anniversary with the District last June but couldn’t bring myself to let it go at that time. Since then, however, I’ve come to realize that my own inner timetable was right, I’m ready to move on to other things. When I hand the reins over to my replacement this coming fall, I will be reflecting on the wonderful experience I’ve had serving in this position for over 21 years. First, as the one and only employee – opening gyms and scheduling fields – and ultimately serving as the Executive Director overseeing this island of parks. Over those many years, the District has grown and become a vital and important part of the community. This was not done by me alone, but by hundreds of volunteers, many hard working staff members, and 28 commissioners. So many wonderful programs developed, partnerships formed, land protected, projects completed, levies won, and families having fun.
I have a great sense of accomplishment when I reflect on my years with the District. I’m a list maker and a goal setter. As each list was completed and each goal achieved, I looked forward to the next challenge. The District moved slowly but surely creating new programs and facilities as the community stepped up to support and participate in the process. It has always been a successful and collaborative effort and along the way I have met and worked with the most wonderful people who are passionate about their sport, program, or park. I know I’ll miss the work and the people here when I’m gone, but I’m looking forward to having more time to spend enjoying the many wonderful parks and programs provided by the District.
The board is now beginning the process of searching for the next executive director. Over the next few months, interested applicants will come forward and share their own vision of the Park District. I’m excited to move on in my own life and also to see the District grow in new ways under new leadership. I will leave the District in the good hands of experienced staff, caring commissioners, and dedicated volunteers with a huge thank you to everyone who has supported and loved, yes, loved, the Park District!
