The new show, Nine Moons features 9 paintings by Korina Knudson, who has signed and shown as Sri Lakshmi to reflect the spiritual influence of the work.

Approaching our end of summer season on Vashon brings lovely images to mind: warm, sunny days, garden harvest(this year, anyway), beach play, and of course, our own sheepdog trial. The island and greater Seattle area communities have gathered each year to see this traditional interplay of handler, sheepdog, and sheep played out on the bucolic setting of Misty Isle Farms through courses modeled on competitions held in the Scottish borderlands for over a century.

VAA honors six exemplary Island artists for this year’s Art Auction. Each artist created a special commissioned piece in their medium to be auctioned during Art Auction weekend, Sept. 21 and 22. Join us at the Auction Preview Party and Artist Reception: Friday, August 31, 6 p.m. The Gallery will also be open First Friday, Sept. 7, 6 pm.

Water. We’re surrounded by it. We swim in it, sail on it, kayak on it, commute on it and wonder at its ever-changing beauty. Island artists capture the theme of water and nature in ethereal oil and pastel paintings by Leslie Wu and wooden boat sculptures, filled with earthen objects by Tom Northington. Painter Mary Rothermel’s delicately painted sunset screens will hang from the gallery ceiling above the sculpture.

Engaged painters Anelecia Hannah and Charles Philip Brooks present paintings from two long-standing traditions of American painting.

These young painters each embody a tradition in American painting. At age 26, Anelecia Hannah’s quiet still lifes, interiors and portraits draw on traditions passed down through a lineage of American painters–careful craftsmanship and meditative observation are wedded with continual wonder and curiosity in every day visual experience.

Tim Carney’s new show entitled ‘Iridescent Inspiration’ will debut at Sunshine AND IDEAS on Friday, October 7th at 6:00 PM

Tim Carney is an artist who is an alchemist at heart. He embodies his artwork with shimmering magic by using space age optical materials that disburse light and produces iridescent rainbow hues of eye dazzling colors.

Two long-time Island artists explore vie intérieure (inner life) in VAA’s October’s Gallery exhibition. Pascale Judet, acrylics and Joanne Hammer, oils bring their work together in a first time public collaboration. Hammer’s work, naïve and colorful with an affinity toward raw spirit forces, emotes themes of mortality, life’s fragility, layers of memory and depictions of meadows, ponds and animals. Deeply sensory and experiential, Hammer’s work (half drawing and half painting) offers expressions of transience and what it means to live close to the land. "Having the consciousness to really observe changes in the natural world and ourselves--being a part of balance with nature—that comes from living here."

What gnarled and wilted heart among us island folk fails to beat a new pace when it senses the staccato shrieks of bald eagles calling from above? We crane, we search and we stare, hoping for a tiny glimpse of the black raptors soaring just above the madrona trees. When we hear the call we know there are two – either a mating pair or a mother and her chick. If we are lucky we see them fly above us for a few seconds, disappearing and reappearing before gliding behind the hilltop or landing in the trees just over there. Then they are gone.
