Ignition Studios & Gallery Opens

Mathilda Oldham, Vashon Vintage, takes a break at her new studio workshop in the old Brenno Glassblowing shop, where Ignition has set up an artist Workspace and Gallery

The old 1930’s garage behind Movie Magic is getting a new life with a whole lot of interior refinishing and the advent of Ignition Studios and Gallery. As a creative work space, the historical four-bay garage is now the new studio home of Vashon Vintage, Island Artistry Tile & Stone, and other area artists. The adjoining space, originally the old shop’s auto parts store, houses Ignition’s Gallery. The Studio and Gallery are hosting their Grand Opening First Friday Exhibition, "Spark in the Darkness" on February 3rd from 6-9 p.m. Entertainment will be provided, beginning at 7:30 by the UMO School of Physical Arts; they will demonstrate the art of "Poi"—fire dancing.

The Gallery Exhibition will host artwork Vashon and Seattle area artists Carol Schwennesen, John Martin, Sharon Hines-Pinion, Roy Kauffman, Tim Carney, and Theresa Henson, and Randall Baird. Additionally, off-island artwork from around the country includes Marino Colmano, a prolific Los Angeles filmmaker and photographer now settled in Virginia; as well as oil paintings and assemblage by conceptual artist and university professor, Yonsenia White, who now resides in North Carolina

The owner of Ignition Studios & Gallery, Lisa Hurst, is a teaching artist who lived here 20 years ago and returned this past year with her son, Sawyer, after many years in Blacksburg, Virginia. She continues to teach part time at the Art Institute of Seattle, has years of experience in marketing, college level teaching, and is certified K-12 in arts education. As a welder, collage artists, and encaustic artist, Lisa truly enjoys the process of art making. Ignition is now the place to explore that process and for others to enjoy creating and exhibiting their own artwork.

Come and enjoy the sparks of creativity flying at Ignition. Starting on Wednesday February 9th, Ignitions winter hours are 12-6p.m. Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and 1-5 on Sundays; extended hours begin in mid-April.
