"Birth Story," winner of the Audience Award at the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival, screens one-time only, Tuesday, March 5th at 6 PM at the Vashon Theatre.

Community Cinema Vashon ends its first year with much appreciation to the community and a great announcement. We are happy to welcome the Voice of Vashon (VoV) as our partner - I think it’s a great match! VoV brings homegrown television and radio broadcasting to islanders. Community Cinema, for our part, is bringing independently produced documentary film from US filmmakers. Though these films are on far reaching subjects, the films are always followed by a discussion to bring the topic to a local level. VoV will be providing audio and visual coverage of upcoming Community Cinema Vashon films and speakers. We will be able to promote VoV programs and print their Logo on our publicity. This partnership also provides liability coverage for our events. Thank you Voice of Vashon!

2012 Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary, will be screened on Vashon. How does a soldier come home - injured physically and psychologically - and build a life anew? This April Community Cinema Vashon Event will be Co-Sponsored by American Hero Quilts and the American Legion Post #159. There is no charge to attend this film and the after film discussion, Sunday, April 15th at the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust Building 2:30-5:30.

On Saturday’s program, film goers will get to go "Around the World" and enjoy some of the best live action and animated short films from the recently wrapped Children’s Film Festival Seattle, The festival is curated by Vashon resident Elizabeth Shepherd and was presented at Northwest Film Forum about a month ago.

Looking for something fun to do on a Sunday afternoon in January? We’ve got the answer for you! Vashon Community Care is putting on a special screening of the locally produced movie, Old Goats, at 2 pm Sunday, January 22 at Vashon Theatre. This movie was written and directed by Taylor Guterson (son of Bainbridge Island author, David Guterson, who wrote Snow Falling on Cedars) and also features actress Benita "Bunny" Staadecker who, with her husband Charlie, used to live on Vashon Island.

Daisy Bates: The First Lady of Little Rock is the story of a seven-year journey of the filmmaker Sharon La Cruise to discover the life of a forgotten civil rights activist named Daisy Bates. Beautiful, glamorous and articulate, Bates was fearless in her quest for justice, stepping into the spotlight to bring national attention to civil rights issues. Unconventional and egotistical, she became a household name in 1957 when she fought for the right of nine black students to attend the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her public support culminated in a constitutional crisis --- pitting a president against a governor and a community against itself.

The Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust is proud to co-sponsor the Community Cinema Vashon’s December film screening of TAKING ROOT: The Vision of Wangari Maathai. This inspirational documentary film is a portrait of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Wangari Maathai and the Green Belt Movement. Everyone is invited to this free event Sunday - December 18th - Ober Park Performance Room - 3:00-5:00pm.

On Saturday November 19th, at 7 p.m. the Vashon-based Big Joy Project, a documentary and website about poet and filmmaker James Broughton (1913-1999), will show a series of short films at Café Luna, as part of Peter Ray’s Lunavision series.

Three of experimental filmmaker James Broughton’s most quirky, joyous and taboo-breaking short films, as well as a 20-minute "sneak preview" of the Big Joy documentary will screen. Broughton films include, "Four in the Afternoon," "The Bed," and "Testament."

Community Cinema Vashon presents a community screening of WE STILL LIVE HERE - AS NUTAYUNEAN - A film by Anne Makepeace - Sunday - Nov 20th - Ober Park Performance Room at 3:00pm. This 60 minute documentary film will be followed by a moderated audience discussion. All islanders with Native American Cultural Heritage are especially invited to share their experiences and knowledge of their history with Native language and cultural identity. This interesting film is appropriate for all ages and youth are encouraged to attend. All Community Cinema events are FREE.
