For years, VHS alums, Alexander Atkins and Andrew Franks, have been making films individually and collaboratively, and sharing them with Vashon. Last April, they reached out to Islanders to help support their latest short film and its online fundraising efforts. Not so much to their surprise, but certainly to their delight, Vashon became their biggest supporter, and with the contributions of over one hundred individuals, from which more than half were from The Island, they raised over $6000 in four weeks!

Their new film is titled, "Men Who Don’t Work," and is based on Pacific Northwest Writer, Raymond Carver’s short story, What Do You Do In San Francisco? It tells the story of a small town postman who becomes enthralled by the mystery of an unusual family that moves into a house on his route. The film’s captivating imagery brings Carver’s simple realism to life, transporting the viewer into the mind of a man forced to grapple with the uncertainties of 1960’s Americana. Shot last May in Portland, Oregon by an entirely volunteer cast and crew, the film was completed last month and is currently being submitted to film festivals worldwide.

Andrew and Alex will always credit Vashon Island as the birthplace of their individual and collaborative creativity, and they are eager to share their latest effort with the community that has supported them from the beginning. "Men Who Don’t Work" will be premiering at Vashon Theater on December 9th at 9:30pm. This public screening is free, and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
