Audience members will be transported into an other-wordly garden when VAA New Works recipients Patricia Kelly and Pat Churchill stage their co-produced/co-directed performance at the Blue Heron. Through the Garden Gate, inspired by Island author Terry Hershey’s book Soul Gardening, showcases multi-media talents of more than 20 Island performers. Theatre in the round, gallery walls will move to accommodate production and seating. Pick up your tickets early, as seating will be limited.

Vashon audiences have a not-to-be-missed treat in store this spring. In perhaps its most ambitious production to date,Vashon Opera is presenting the Russian master piece, "Eugene Onegin". It’s an unforgettable opera that brings together the work of two Russian cultural giants -- the lush, dramatic music of Tchaikovsky

Church of Great Rain will present a special Revival Show on Sunday, May 20 at Open Space for Arts and Community. The show’s musical guests will be Seattle based world-soul-pop band Luc and the Lovingtons. The show will feature the Church House Band and the Holy Roller Radio Players will be performing some of the best skits from the early days at the Red Bike and the first year at Open Space. Audience members are invited to join in the fun by writing on a topic to be read aloud during the show.

VAA’s Musical Theatre production, Fiddler on the Roof Jr., under Marita Ericksen’s direction, explodes on stage with 35 talented singers, actors and musicians, ages 7 to 17. Since January, the multi-age cast constructed characters, learned choreography and rehearsed songs. The performance takes place Thursday (Food Bank benefit), Friday, Saturday, May 3-5, 7 pm, and Saturday, May 5, 2 pm.

Improvisational comedy found a home with Seattle’s Jet City Improv troupe nearly 20 years ago. Their fast-paced, funny, tried and true method of bringing audience ideas to life on the spot has entertained countless audience members of all ages and earned them the description of Seattle’s best comedy show.

The beautiful London sculptress could barely believe she’d been summoned to the retired sleuth’s estate. "You came to my attention long before you showed an artistic inclination," states the eccentric, legendary detective-consultant. The young woman couldn’t believe the next words uttered by Sherlock Holmes: "I am your father."

Church of Great Rain promises comic relief for taxing times at a special April Foolishness Show at 4PM on Sunday, April 1 at Open Space for Arts and Community. The show will feature Seattle singer Star Anna with guitarist Justin Davis. Show co-founder Frank Hein, now living on Catalina Island in California, will be making a special guest appearance.

VAA’s first New Works Series 2012, presents Lelavision’s latest endeavor "Harvesting Light." A musical-sculpture installation/performance event, Ela Lamblin and Leah Mann perform Harvesting Light with Island guest artists Jason Staczek (composer), Lynelle Sjoberg and Abby Enson (movement artists). Two performances offer an earlier, abbreviated kid-friendly interactive performance, followed by a full length show.

Vashon Opera presents Hansel and Gretel, a charming story with a candy house! Will the brother and sister free more than 30 Vashon Island children from the witch’s clutches? Come find out while hearing beautiful voices and the soaring melodies of a classic opera.

Church of Great Rain promises love in the afternoon with heartfelt humor at a special Valentines Show on Sunday, February 12 at 4PM at Open Space for Arts and Community. The show will feature guest appearances by mythologist Michael Meade and musician Ian Moore.

Tangletown Cabaret, an all-women trio, includes classically-trained, mezzo-soprano/composer Sarah Mattox (who performed with Vashon Opera) violinist/violist Jo Nardolillo and pianist Judith Cohen. The talented trio will entertain with a Valentine’s concert for VAA’s Panache Jazz Series, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb 11 at Vashon Allied Arts, complete with champagne and chocolate.

Back by popular demand, Steffon Moody and family performs The Grinch- Sets the Record Straight at the Vashon Movie Theater, along with a showing of  Dr. Seuss’ classic holiday cartoon, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (narrated by Boris Karloff).  The free event is on Thurs., Dec. 22nd @ 7:30pm, and is gifted to the community by the Vashon Parks District and Vashon Theater.  

It is the many themes surrounding Christmas-time that makes the season resonate so deeply within the collective heart. Hope, generosity, reconciliation, forgiveness, forbearance, family, kindness, and a sense of place within a community touches on but a few of the many mosaic pieces that collectively constitute the image of Christmas in our memories, hearts and minds. The season has its own music and traditions, its food and drink, its smells and colors, trappings and decorations. It is a glowing, twinkling, swirling snowstorm raining down emotions and sensations all around us like the eddying drifts in an old snow globe on a mantelpiece above a whispering fire. 

~ An Evening of Brief Spoofs ~

Friday, Dec. 23rd @ 8pm @ The Red Bike, Aimee Cartier, Andy Royer, Harris Levinson, Jeff Hoyt, Jim Farrell, Steffon Moody & physical comedian extraordinaire, Bill Robison provide a sure-fire antidote to the Holiday season with "Holiday Comedy Shorts: An Evening of Brief Spoofs." Come early, pay $5 and we’ll spike your seasonal eggnog with hilarity.

Church of Great Rain will celebrate the spirit of the season with a Holiday Show on December 11 at 4PM at Open Space for Arts and Community.

The Holiday Show will feature the Church House Band, twisted news and irreverent views by the Holy Roller Radio Players, and a lively impromptu sermon by the preacher. Over sixty uniquely talented actors, musicians, writers, and technical crew contribute to these wonderful collaborations. Joining the cast for this performance will be Island actor and singer Louis Mangione.

Blue Heron Dance transports one and all into the magical world of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet on the VHS stage just in time for the holiday season. Performed by countless dancers for more than a century, the story, in dance, revolves around Clara, a young girl whose imagination takes flight during her Christmas Eve dreamscape.

Showcasing Island dance talents, 60 students ages 8 to 18, Nutcracker represents a dancer’s rite of passage. The beloved annual production is reinvented every year, with the additions of new choreography, costumes pieces, set designs and new dancers rising through the ranks. But Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score and the tale remain timeless.

"Really Rosie," a well-known children’s musical theatre production, began as a collaboration in the 1970’s, between author Maurice Sendack and iconic songwriter Carole King. VAA Musical Theatre’s troupe of more than 20 theatre-savvy Island kids will perform their adaptation, complete with characters and stories they created, December 1, 3-4, at the Blue Heron Art Center. Creative team for the project, Director Sue Wiley and Artistic/Musical Director Marita Ericksen, have met with the students after school at the Blue Heron since mid-September.

It’s a Thanksgiving Eve tradition! The Seattle International Standup Comedy Finals are a great way to relax with friends and family the night before Turkey Day! Tickets are $17/15. The Vashon Theatre will host day two of the finals, November 23, at 8pm.

The finals conclude Sunday, November 27, at the Comedy Underground in Seattle.

Vashon’s own music, comedy, variety show will present their Halloween Spooktacular on Sunday October 30th at Open Space. The show will be tricked out with thrills, chills and great gobs of ghoulish humor featuring twisted news and irreverent views from the Holy Roller Radio Players and uplifting music by the Church House Band.

Marshall Murray, who recently performed in Drama Dock’s Rocky Horror Show, joins the cast and special musical guest Scott Huckabay brings his guitar artistry to the stage.  

Vashon Allied Arts presents Atticus, a powerful tale of familial love between a father and his wayward son, 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Nov.5 and 6, and 2 p.m., Nov. 5, at Blue Heron Art Center.

The play, adapted by St. John Vianney’s Fr. Marcus Powell, is based on a national bestseller novel penned by California-based author Ron Hansen. Hansen will also attend opening night and invite audience discussion following the performance.  

Eve Was Framed, a bold, multimedia one-woman show that uses satire and social commentary to explore the persistence of misogyny in contemporary culture will be staged at the Red Bicycle Bistro and Sushi on Friday, October 21, at 8:30 p.m.

Written and performed by Lynann Politte, her poignant perspective draws from current events, her personal experiences, and historical, cultural, and social acts against women.

Get ready to laugh when two-time Guinness World Record holder Alex Zerbe, voted Seattle’s Funniest Prop Comic, launches VAA’s 2011-12 Family Series into the stratosphere. Add some fun to your Sunday, October 23, 2 pm, at the Blue Heron. Zerbe serves up a full hour of amazing stunts, physical comedy and audience participation in a high energy, all-ages show.

Don’t miss VAA New Works Series opener this weekend when veteran Island movement artist/choreographer Karen Nelson and friends celebrate the experience of embodiment. The Blue Heron walls will come down for this performance featuring some of the regions top names in movement and performance including: dancer/choreographers Kris Wheeler and Lila Hurwitz (both of Seattle), visual installation artist Susan Gladstone (Portland), percussionist John Dancey (Vashon) and more.
