A Special Presentation for the Opera Fans of the Future!

Robert Wood and his brother Richard meet Gretel, Emily Haight, as rehearsals are underway. More than 30 Vashon children will sing in the production. In the photo, Robert is the boy speaking to Gretel.

Vashon Opera presents Hansel and Gretel, a charming story with a candy house! Will the brother and sister free more than 30 Vashon Island children from the witch’s clutches? Come find out while hearing beautiful voices and the soaring melodies of a classic opera.

The special free opera presentation for opera fans of the future will be sung in English in a 45 minute abridged version. Vashon Opera’s gift to the community, sponsored by Vashon Park District, tells the tale of two delightful children lost in a forest and their escape from a wicked witch. Vashon Opera’s production is a little scary, a lot funny and all tied together with music by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck.

Sung by a young professional cast, this shortened opera is the perfect introduction to the art form of opera. The cast includes Emily Haight as Gretel, Sorayah Surkatty as Hansel, Kaitlyn Morrell as the witch and Erin White as the Dew Fairy.

"This is the second time Vashon Opera has produced an opera specifically for children. Little Red Riding Hood in 2010 was a huge success and a wonderful experience for us. We wanted to repeat that experience and this time with more than 30 Vashon Island children to sing along in the final song", says Jennifer Krikawa, Artistic Director of Vashon Opera, "Introducing children to classical music early on is important for their appreciation of music and theatre. The children will hear real opera singers up close with a fun story."

(Intended for ages 3-12 years old; Grown-ups are welcome if they are accompanying a child)
