For several months, Tlingit artist Odin Lonning has been working on multiple projects, including a large totem commission. Starting this weekend, Saturday and Sunday May 2 – 3 from 10 AM to 5 PM, the public is invited to Vashon Forest Stewards to view two totem poles nearing completion, as well as the artist’s educational display and a variety of pieces for sale -- just in time for Mother’s Day.

in a new location at the spectacular Outer Space of Open Space for Arts & 
Community, only a few stars
 down Vashon’s interplanetary superhighway.

From the first time we met him, Shaun Peterson already knew what he wanted to create for the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum.  Laurie Tucker and I, co-curators for an exhibit telling about Vashon’s first people, came with a mutual friend, Holly Taylor, to visit Shaun in Fife and discuss the project we hoped to fund with a grant from 4Culture. Shaun, whose native name is Qwalsius, told us he wanted to create the figure of an octopus. Wonderful, I thought, he probably admires their intelligence and the female’s fine parenting instincts.

Painters, potters, poets, performers – Vashon’s deeply-rooted community of professional artists comprise a very special part of public education for island students. Every year, teachers in Vashon Island School District welcome artists into their classrooms to provide residencies through a nationally-recognized program called Vashon Artists in Schools. In the spring of 2013, VAIS connected 20 Vashon artists with K-12 classrooms teachers.

On September 13, 14, and 15, from dawn to dusk each day, sheepdogs will cunningly herd sheep on a beautiful, serene Misty Isle Farms pasture. Hundreds of people will watch, and be amazed and amused as the competition unfolds before their eyes.
 

One of the best and most amazing arts sales on the Island happens at Vashon Allied Arts Gallery Memorial weekend, May 24 – 26. Friday evening until Sunday afternoon, over 70 of Vashon’s favorite artists bring archived works to you – their friends and collectors.
 

Submit your art images to Ignition Gallery for two different upcoming "collaborated" exhibitions. Submit 3-5 images with dimensions and medium to ignitionartists@yahoo.com. The first show is coming VERY quickly so respond promptly if you would like to join!

Vashon resident performing artists are invited to apply for Vashon Allied Arts’ New Works Series 2013, and join a long tradition of innovative New Works performances.VAA New Works Series was established in 1989, as a creative opportunity for Island artists to present new work.

After a five-year break from his studio, Vashon astrologer and artist Frederick Woodruff will unveil 16 new paintings and collages at his upcoming show at the Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union on Friday September 7.

Enjoy art, tasty appetizers and libations at VAA’s annual Art Auction Preview Party, Friday, August 31, 6 to 9 pm. Honoring local artists who donated over 150 pieces of original art, this free Island gathering launches an exciting, spy-themed FUNdraising Art Auction, slated for September 21-22. This year’s Commissioned Artists are: Larry Muir, Brad Davis, Jayne Quig, Olivia Pendergast, Israel Shotridge and Don Glaister.
