High Winds and power outages started off the Thanksgiving week on Vashon Island. Just as Vason Islanders were going about their afternoon, several power outages were reported across the island.

The King County Sheriffs Office reports that the search for a missing woman has ended. India Castle was found dead early Saturday afternoon in a shallow pond near the Vashon Airport .  . 

Washington State Ferries announced that due to routine maintinance. There will be a temporary capacity reduction on the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route starting after this Friday (11/9/12) evening’s commute

Vashon Island experienced an Island Wide power outage, Monday around 5pm. Power was also reported out in parts of Kitsap county. Power was restored around 6pm. 

U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Seattle) will attend a fundraiser on Vashon Island. McDermott will take questions from the community.

Background: Island Landmarks’, a Vashon- based non-profit corporation, is responsible for stewarding the historic Mukai house and garden. On June 4th, 2012, Island Landmarks’ members met at a "special meeting" and removed the prior board. Members elected a new board of 11 Vashon based community members including historians, librarians, educators, historical preservationists, project managers, a landscape architect, and a lawyer.

 King County Executive Dow Constantine today announced a proposed partnership with Vashon Island Fire and Rescue (VIFR) to renovate the VIFR Association Building in downtown Vashon for use as a multi-purpose rural service center that will create efficiencies, reduce costs to the public, and better serve Island residents.  

Saturday, August 11, noon-2pm . Come to Tramp Harbor Dock to see scuba divers submerge themselves and find sea stars, anemones, crabs, sculpins and other sea life for us to meet up close and personal! Divers and Vashon Beach Naturalists will tell stories about how the animals live, what they eat and who eats them. FREE program for all ages!

The Seattle Area Mini owner Association is having their annual "Vashon Bash", Saturday Aug 11. Cars will be on Display at the Vashon Island Roasterie between 10:30am - 12:30pm. These cars car are the original classic minis and Coopers made from 1959 to 2000. Expect to see about 25 cars.

There is a property just outside downtown Vashon that tells a unique and important story. It is the universal story of those who come to America to build a future for themselves and their family, yet it also tells how one of those immigrants expressed the deep cultural roots of her homeland. Recognized as a local, regional and national treasure, the Mukai House and Garden combines a typical American suburban home of the late 1920s designed and built by Japanese immigrant B.D. Mukai, and a traditional Japanese hill garden designed by his wife, Kuni Mukai. 

Many Americans watched their first sheepdog competition in the 1995 movie, Babe, in which a runty pig rises above barnyard prejudices and his own insecurities to become a prize-winning sheep herder and the pride of his farm. A century-old sport originating in Britain and New Zealand, sheepdog (sorry, no pigs) trials are gaining popularity in the U.S. and Canada, with more than 1,500 dog handlers participating nationwide in competitions like the Vashon Sheepdog Classic, scheduled for September 14, 15, and 16 on Vashon Island.

Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) has been detected at levels of concern in shellfish samples collected from Quartermaster Harbor on Vashon-Maury Island. As a result, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has closed Quartermaster Harbor to the recreational harvest of shellfish.

Beginning July 1, many Vashon residents will begin being fined $25 per day for septic systems that may or may not be failing and polluting Puget Sound.

King County is 20 years behind the rest of the 12 counties surrounding Puget Sound in helping property owners repair or replace failing septic systems that are polluting the sound. Every other county has provided financial aid for property owners by utilizing funds available from federal, state and private sources. The EPA Sea Grant program used by 10 of the other 11 counties for septic system water pollution control provided more than $4.5 million dollars this year. King County did not apply or their application did not qualify.  

Snarled traffic at the Fauntleroy ferry dock, higher property taxes, arsenic-contaminated soil removal and rumble strips on the Vashon highway were addressed at the Monday night Vashon-Maury Island Community Council meeting.

Monday night, May 21, attendees at the Vashon Maury Island Community Council meeting heard the results of the actions taken since the passage of the Marine Recovery Area Septic Waiver motion passed at the March 19 meeting. Meanwhile, rumble strip opponents grumbled at King County Dept. of Transportation officials at Chautauqua School across the parking lot.

Representatives from Washington State Ferries (WSF) will be docking on Vashon on Tuesday from 6PM - 8PM @ McMurray, sharing information and answering questions about what’s new and what’s next for the nation’s largest ferry system.  

The inspection of the Tillikum has been completed earlier than anticipated and the vessel will return to the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route at the beginning of the service day on Tuesday, May 22, restoring normal three-boat service. 

The King County Road Services Division will hold an open house from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 21 at Chatauqua Elementary School to familiarize residents with proposed safety improvements on Vashon Highway.

The power was out on Vashon and Maury Island. This was an Island Wide outage that started around 4:45 am. There is no report on what caused the outage Power was restored at around 6:10am
