Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) has been detected at unsafe levels in Quartermaster Harbor shellfish on Vashon-Maury Island.  As a result, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has closed Quartermaster Harbor beaches to recreational shellfish harvest.

A Vashon Island man rammed a King County Patrol car around 8:30pm Saturday. The officer fired at the red pickup truck the suspect was driving, but he got away.

A Vashon Island man rammed a King County Patrol car around 8:30pm Saturday. The officer fired at the red pickup truck the suspect was driving, but he got away. The suspect was wanted for allegedly making threats on Saturday after displaying erratic behavior. The suspect allegedly tried to run over the deputy as the officer was outside his vehicle.

“The decision has been a long time in the making, as Ace Hardware has been talking to us for more than a decade. In the past year, we took the idea more seriously and made the final decision in October.” Yates said.

The Washington Department of Natural Resources continues to help clean out Quartermaster Harbor. On Tuesday, November 4, a 100 foot former Naval harbor tug was pulled out of Quartermaster Harbor.

The Washington Department of Natural Resources continues to help clean out Quartermaster Harbor. On Tuesday, November 4, a 100 foot former Naval harbor tug was pulled out of Quartermaster Harbor.

Built in 1944 in Jacksonville, Florida the Wingina saw service in the Columbia River Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet. The Tug was sold into commercial service in 1986 and was renamed Murph.

Its final disposition: stripped and scuttled in Quartermaster Harbor, Maury Island, in October 2007.

On Saturday, September 13, 2014, hundreds of area cyclists will spend their entire day at those edges, taking on all of Vashon’s least fair, most gnarly hills, during the 4th annual Passport To Pain.

Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison (DSP) has been detected at unsafe levels in Quartermaster Harbor shellfish on Vashon-Maury Island.  As a result, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has closed Quartermaster Harbor beaches to recreational shellfish harvest.

The closure includes clams, oysters, mussels, oysters, geoduck and scallops.  Working with partners, Public Health – Seattle & King County is posting advisory signs at beaches warning people to not collect shellfish.

State Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson today named Capt. George A. Capacci interim assistant secretary in charge of the Ferries Division for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

State Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson today named Capt. George A. Capacci interim assistant secretary in charge of the Ferries Division for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Capacci will lead the ferry system until a permanent assistant secretary is selected. WSDOT will conduct a nationwide search to find the best replacement for outgoing Assistant Secretary David Moseley who resigned effective April 15.

On Friday (February 21st, 2014), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved Voice of Vashon’s application for an FM radio station.

On Friday (February 21st, 2014), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved Voice of Vashon’s application for an FM radio station. Fourteen years ago a small group of volunteers dared to dream that Vashon could have its own live radio voice. Now, that dream has come true. The new station was assigned the frequency 101.9 on the FM dial. Voice of Vashon is still reviewing several options for call letters, whish are usually assigned after the construction permit has been issued for a new station.

Bakkhos Holding, the company that is purchasing the K2 building, is inviting islanders to attend its own public meeting on Vashon this week. The meeting is scheduled for this Thursday Feb. 13 at 7pm at the Open Space for arts and Community.

Friends of Mukai won its case in the state Court of Appeals.  On December 23rd the three-judge panel issued its decision, agreeing with the Friends of Mukai that Superior Court Judge Monica Benton was mistaken when, in November of 2012, she ruled in favor of the Matthews Board and dismissed the case against them.

During my recent trip to Washington DC I was pleasantly surprised by some things. Obviously it is quite an honor to even be invitdgasfed as one of 12 global teams to come to such an event, and the publicity was awesome.

During my recent trip to Washington DC I was pleasantly surprised by some things. Obviously it is quite an honor to even be invited as one of 12 global teams to come to such an event, and the publicity was awesome. The learning and the networking however was nothing short of amazing. While we were there we got to be interviewed by Popular Mechanics, CBS News, and National Geographic and our stoves photo was featured in the New York Times. The visit to the Austrian Embassy and visiting with the Danes and the Finns was very exciting as well.

Vashon’s Indoor Skatepark, located at the Burton Adventure Recreation Center, will be implementing several significant changes starting on November 1, 2013.
 
Indoor Skatepark will no longer be fully supervised by Vashon Park District staff. In an effort to reduce cost and maintain hours of operation, the Indoor Skatepark will begin operating like all the parks on Vashon: unsupervised and open all day.
