Many people are changing their garden practices when they learn that some pesticides can be very harmful to their pets who spend so much time playing in their landscape.

Many people are changing their garden practices when they learn that some pesticides can be very harmful to their pets who spend so much time playing in their landscape.

Pesticides can run off into streams, evaporate or drift into the air, and drain into our groundwater where they can cause harm to us and wildlife. The direct risk to our health from our use of pesticides in our landscape may sometimes be minimized by proper use, and if we do not spend a lot of time in our landscape.

It would be nearly impossible to live in America today and not know that there is a woman running for the position of President. Indeed, with a campaign slogan that focuses your attention entirely upon her sex (I’m with HER), how could you miss it?

Right now, we are facing a serious threat to our safety and freedom. As is so often the case, this threat is coming from good people, well-intentioned people who seek only to protect society.  But good intentions aren’t enough.

Bob T.  was my best friend and we managed to get into a lot of trouble together such as the day we stole some pigeons from old man Therkelsen and Sheriff Starr made us take them back to the henhouse we had stolen them from.  We were guilty.

I am grateful to Marcia C. Pearson, Joana Gardiner and Jo An Herbert for kick-starting awareness around our food choices and the environment. The angle they bring is well-documented and accurate. Modern agricultural practices have huge and devastating impacts on our environment.

Modern agricultural practices have huge and devastating impacts on our environment. For those who missed their article, Think you can be a Meat & Dairy Environmentalist? Think Again, these specific areas of environmental damage via “animal-related” food production were covered:
Global Warming & Air Pollution
Water Pollution
Land Use & Food Waste

There has been a lot of talk lately about “going green” and reducing your ecological footprint. Many environmentalists suggest switching to compact florescent lights, taking shorter showers, and driving a hybrid car. While these things do help, the environmental benefits of these actions pale in comparison to the good done by going vegan

Many environmentalists suggest switching to compact florescent lights, taking shorter showers, and driving a hybrid car. While these things do help, the environmental benefits of these actions pale in comparison to the good done by going vegan—eliminating your consumption of meat, eggs, and dairy products—the single best thing you can do to protect our environment and reduce pollution.

Ominous reminders of impending “old” age assail us from every direction. From bold headlines informing us that an average of 8,000 baby boomers are turning 65 each day (and for the next 18 years), to constant advice for staying healthy by eating right and exercising - how can we ignore reality? In 2010, reality in the U.S. indicated that 40 million people were 65 or older, and 5.5 million of those were over 85. That was 13% of the total population; by 2030 those numbers will grow to 72 million senior citizens, or about 20% of the entire population. (source: AgingStats.gov)

On May 10th, we hosted a documentary film called The Greater Good. In the process of bringing this film to the island, we learned the following:

1-Amongst parents of young children, there is a growing culture of shaming and judgment with regard to vaccine choices. As a result, this topic is carefully avoided at regular gathering events for families.
2- A secret, invitation-only Facebook group has been formed for parents who are seeking support and information in a safe environment.

We live in a time-stressed culture. “Faster and better” are spoken so frequently as a pair that we’ve come to view them as synonyms. Faster might be nice for internet connections, but it causes problems when applied to human beings.

Faster might be nice for internet connections, but it causes problems when applied to human beings. Fast food is not better food. Quick naps are not better sleep. Ten minute medical appointments are not better health care. Sound bites are not better conversation.

And while experts are at a loss to name a cause, two things are agreed upon: asthma kills (3,404 deaths U.S. deaths attributed to asthma in 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) and drugs are a far less than perfect solution (just read the precautions on the label for asthma drugs).

For humans, the drive to learn is as powerful as the drive to eat. There’s a good reason for this. Eating and learning are both equally vital for our survival. Humans generally don’t survive based upon instinct. We are learners, and as such, information has long been treasured, preserved, gifted, sometimes hoarded, and quite often controlled. Thus the frequently heard phrase, “Knowledge is Power.”

Kathy Abascal’s recent article, Time to Quit Using Stevia, brought up some excellent points. That said, I’d like to encourage you to “consider” Stevia, rather than simply quit it. While there is much to “throw out” when it comes to zero calorie sweeteners, amid all that bath water, there is a baby worth keeping.

When the media discusses autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it is usually in terms of disabled children. But children have this odd habit of growing up into adults. The population of adults with ASD is quite large and growing larger every year. So, what does it mean to be an adult with ASD? And what are the likely impacts upon our overall society?

Sometimes another person’s choice will boggle our mind. When it does, hopefully we’ll realize we are boggling someone else’s mind, too! And aim for tolerance. A not-so-easy goal.
