Women in Jazz: Jewell Jazz Quartet

Extraordinarily versatile, jazz singer Cheryl Jewell captivates audiences with her pure tone and soulful interpretations of jazz standards, including "My Blue Heaven," "Cry me a River," and for St. Paddy’s Day, she sings her favorite rendition of "Danny Boy." Joining Jewell, hear top Seattle studio musicians: pianist Darin Clendenin, bassist Chuck Kistler and drummer Milo Petersen. Her recent recording session at KPLU had callers asking for more.
 
As a child, Cheryl Jewell spent hours listening to big band recordings and solo artists including Nancy Wilson and Barbara Streisand. She studied and emulated nuances and intonations to develop her own dynamic, elegant style. "Singing has always been my first love, from the time I was three or four years old," says Jewell.
 
From her Seattle home, Jewell moved to Chicago and Detroit to study the blues. From there she lit up the LA pop and rock music scene. Gaining experience and notoriety through multiple television performances, and touring nationally with several bands, she continued to hone her musical chops. With her various bands, she opened for the likes of Leon Russell, Edgar Winter, Jerry Lee Lewis, Don McLean and others. Lou Rawls said, "She has the voice of an angel."
 
Returning to her beloved Northwest in 2002, Jewell rediscovered her first love – jazz. "I’ve had such a diverse experience in music that it’s prepared me for this moment in jazz," says Jewell, "Jazz gave me a foundation to truly sing as a singer’s singer." – by Janice Randall
