One Lucky Guy

What if a guy asked six women out for one night of singing and fun and they all said yes? Well, you’d have One Lucky Guy.

What if a guy asked six women out for one night of singing and fun and they all said yes? Well, you’d have One Lucky Guy.

Jon Whalen did just that. He created a show to sing duets with some of the many women vocalists he admires Kat Eggleston, Arlette Moody, Jennifer Sutherland, Sally Knodell, Adrienne Selvy Mildon, and Lyn McManus and he is calling that show "One Lucky Guy,".

So who is this Guy? Whalen is one energetic and multi-talented performer who has lived on Vashon Island for over a decade. He sings and plays guitar with the band The FieldHands. Most recently his creative antics and sound effects brought much laughter at the long-running Vashon extravaganza Church of Great Rain.

"I thought about this show for over a year. I really wanted to sing with all these great women singers on the island. There was never an opportunity, so I created one," said Whalen. "This show is my way to celebrate them."

The band he assembled for the concert features Luke McQuillin (guitar), Gary Kiggins (drums), Ainslie MacLeod (bass), and Christopher Overstreet (keyboards). Also joining in on a few songs will be Mike Nichols playing a ferocious harmonica, and veteran musicians Diane Krouse on sax and Kim Thall on fiddle.

Whalen picked a wide variety of songs ranging from the ‘50s Rat Pack era to ‘70s rock to some dynamic punk-rocker inspired duets. He will sing two to three songs with each of his star attractions.

Here is a little preview of what his luck will bring you:

Whalen’s Church of Great Rain buddy Adrienne Selvy Mildon has played keyboard and guitar and sang on Vashon Island for 10 years. Among the songs she will sing with Whalen includes "Building a Mystery" by Sarah McLachlan.

Arlette Moody is known well on Vashon for her unique vocal work, dancing and performances that are a feast for the senses. She’ll be shaking us up singing Tina Turner’s version of "Proud Mary."

Country crooner and all around comedic talent Jennifer Sutherland sings the sweet love song "Portland, Oregon," made famous by Loretta Lynn and Jack White in recent years.

Accomplished folk/Celtic singer Kat Eggleston will liven up the evening with her incredible guitar playing tunes like "Killing the Blues."

Lyn McManus, whose professional voice talent and comedic range was showcased on the Church of Great Rain stage, will take us back to the ‘70s via "Hotel California" by the Eagles.

Whalen’s longtime friend Sally Knodell, who was in the Seattle band Failure to Disperse with him for eight years, will join him on stage again singing such songs as "I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight" by Bob Dylan.

Knodell says Whalen’s performances are exuberant and "he puts his heart into every song." Combine that with some of the best women vocalists around and you really have more than One Lucky Guy. We all are lucky.
