A Brazilian Evening with the Gurgel Quartet

Acclaimed Brazilian mother and daughter team, Debora Gurgel and Dani Gurgel return to the US to debut UM, an album featuring original compositions and bold arrangements of Brazilian standards. Joined on Vashon by Seattle-based Adriana Giordano’s Quarteto for one very special evening of music…

The Gurgel Quartet: Featuring Dani Gurgel, Debora Gurgel, Sidiel Vieira and Thiago Rabello
"Mixing traditional styles with modern grooves, all while featuring the fantastic voice of Dani Gurgel." — ArtistShare, USA
"Dani’s scat singing sounds Brazilian yet her intervals, attacks, articulations and musical phrasing sound like jazz." — La Nacion, Argentina

Following hot on the heels of the success of their 2012 Tour (New York City, Boston and Seattle, Argentina and Uruguay), Debora Gurgel and Dani Gurgel return to the US this September to debut their first collaborated album, UM (which means One.)

Debora Gurgel and Dani Gurgel have always been involved in each other’s projects, as composition and interpretation partners, but this is their first collaborated album.

They have found a magical way of weaving their compositions together creating an inseparable marriage between instrumental music and carefully crafted lyrics, highlighting Dani’s voice as a scatting woodwind instrument into a ambient jazz improvisation, stitched along the tradition of the Brazilian popular music. Drummer and UM producer Thiago Rabello along with bassist Sidiel Vieira beautifully complete this family style quartet.

Their performance at the 12th Tokyo Jazz Festival will kick of the 2013 Tour, then they will make their way to the United States stopping in San Francisco, New York, Boston, Seattle, Vashon and Portland. Dani, Debora and Thiago will also be teaching Brazilian master clinics at the Jazzschool in Berkeley, California and The Royal Room in Seattle, Washington. The quartet will top off their 2013 Tour with 8 shows throughout Paulo State, Brazil.

The Gurgel Quartet:
After playing various musical instruments over 15 years, Dani Gurgel was able to find the one instrument she loved most, her voice. Known as a modern Brazilian singer-songwriter, Dani has found a unique way of combining beautiful lyrics and complicated vocalises with hints of Rosa Passos, Joyce Moreno,
Elis Regina and Mônica Salmaso. Dani has 4 previous solo albums and one live DVD performance recorded at the top of a São Paulo’s landmark building, Viadutos.

Debora Gurgel is a pianist, arranger, composer and educator who takes Brazilian jazz to its roots and back with a modern approach. Her compositions are extremely sophisticated, with jazz harmonies and classical influences merged with Brazilian rhythms. She has written for Jazz Sinfônica Orchestra, Tom Jobim Orchestra, Filó Machado, Lilian Carmona, Chico Pinheiro and Amilton Godoy. As an educator Debora has taught at CLAM (Zimbo Trio’s school), Auditório Ibirapuera and São Paulo’s Municipal School of Music.

Thiago Rabello is, among other credentials, a go-getter, but a multifaceted, self-taught drummer. Thiago has performed and recorded with multiple artists, ranging from jazz icons such as Cesar Camargo Mariano, Leny Andrade and Romero Lubambo to Brazilian pop and country stars, Pedro Mariano and Chitãozinho & Xororó. He also runs his own studio, Parede-Meia, producing music for Rafa Barreto, Demetrius Lulo and the awarded Italian composer Domenico Imperato.

Sidiel Vieira studied acoustic and electric bass as well as conducting in two of the finest music schools in Brazil, ULM and São Paulo’s Municipal School of Music. He was a member of Orquestra Jovem Tom Jobim and later Banda Jazz Sinfônica de Diadema. He has also performed with Johnny Alf, Filó Machado, Jane Duboc, Theo de Barros, Dominguinhos, Nailor Proveta, Bocato, Fabiana Cozza, Vinicius Dorin and many others.
