Voice of Vashon is again hosting a film contest for islanders. Newly-named RockFlicks, the contest is in its second year. RockFlicks is a themed, short-film competition judged by age group. Filmmakers this year will explore the possibilities in the concept Insider/Outsider.
Contest coordinators strive to present filmmakers with stimulating topics that will allow exploration of issues that affect everyone. The theme of Insider/Outsider will resonate for islanders, but it also presents both artists and audiences an opportunity to engage with a variety of perspectives on issues that underlie conflict world-wide.
RockFlicks is for anyone of any age or experience level.
Lindsay Aickin, co-coordinating the contest again this year, said, "We were delighted with the number of young people who submitted work last year. We hope this contest continues to be an annual event and gives Vashon videographers a local venue for their work to be seen and appreciated."
Entries must be five minutes or less, and submitted in DVD format. Films will be broken into age categories for judging: under eighteen, and eighteen and over. In May, the community can vote for the "people’s choice" on the VoV website. Vashon Film professionals will determine the "judge’s choice". There will be a $100 prize for the two judge’s choice winners. The Vashon Theater will show the two winning films, and they will be aired on Channel 21.
The sponsors of RockFlicks are Voice of Vashon, Welcome Vashon, Vashon Healthy Communities Network, VARSA, Vashon Theatre and 4Culture.
It’s not too early to get started as submission deadline is May 4. Details are on the VoV website, voiceofvashon.org. Please call Lindsay Aickin at 877-2631, or Jean Bosch at 919-5223, with questions.
