Seattle film director Griffiths brings “Lucky Them” to Vashon Theatre

Vashon, Washington (September 22, 2014) Vashon Film Society welcomes influential Seattle film director Megan Griffiths back to the Vashon Theatre on Friday, October 3 for a presentation of her newest film “Lucky Them.” Griffiths visited the island a few months ago for the screening of her gripping human trafficking drama “Eden,” but another side of her talents is displayed with this refreshing romantic dramedy starring Toni Collette.

“Lucky Them,” which premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival and was most recently seen locally at Northwest Film Forum, focuses on Seattle rock journalist Ellie Klug who is assigned by her editor (Oliver Platt) to track down an enigmatic musician from her past. Ellie is joined on her road trip by an eccentric amateur filmmaker (Thomas Haden Church), and an offbeat adventure ensues as Ellie grapples with friendship, love, and being middle aged in a youth culture.

Some surprising names are associated with the film. Screenwriter Emily Wachtel grew up in Connecticut and came to know Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward well – in fact, she remains best friends with the famous acting duo’s daughter Clea Newman. Paul Newman was associated with the script for “Lucky Them” for many years, and after his death, Woodward took over as executive producer of the project.  There is another high profile Hollywood name and face in “Lucky Them,” but this actor’s pivotal cameo in the film is uncredited. Film goers will enjoy asking director Griffiths about her experience working with this very famous mystery player.

There will be a Q&A following the screening of the film. Vashon Film Society presents special feature and documentary presentations on First Friday Gallery Cruise nights following the art walk. Friday’s show at the Vashon Theatre plays at 9:30 pm, and tickets are $7.
