On Saturday, October 12, Voice of Vashon will inaugurate Open Studio, a free drop-in educational opportunity for any Islander who wants to learn how to create radio programs.

If you have an idea for a radio show and need the skills to get it on the air, the VoV studio at Sunrise Ridge will be staffed by trainers ready to teach the art of radio production. This opportunity is available to every experience level from novice to moderate on the second Saturday of every month from 10am to 3pm.

Voice of Vashon is Island powered media, with original shows created by and for Vashon-Maury Islanders. VoV’s longest-running show, The Jazz Guy offers up a delightfully eclectic mix of some of the world’s best jazz, creatively put together into themed, one-hour shows by Bill Wood, a retired Hollywood screenwriter, and his audio engineer, Michael Golen-Johnson. Bill and Michael have created over 300 jazz shows highlighting flowers, insects, birds, oceans, friends, dreams, Halloween, sports, really rotten people and love. Bill’s first production with a food theme aired in July 1999.

Prose, Poetry and Purpose is VoV’s newest radio show created and self-produced by Islander March Twisdale. The show offers Island authors an opportunity to discuss their work and the social messages and political ideas that inform their writing. Through stories, a good writer can capture our imagination, draw us into their characters and change us from the inside out. From Mark Twain to George Orwell, fiction has long served as a platform for social commentary, a tradition that continues today. March asks her guest writers a question many with an interest in social activism likely wonder: "How do you hope to use your literary work to create change in your readers?"

Voice of Vashon is also participating in a Sunrise Ridge open house on Sunday, October 13. You can take a tour of the studios, broadcast truck and the new Voice of Vashon website.
